If you are concerned about your oral health, the meals and treats that abound this time of the year may make life seem like a dental obstacle course. While it may seem like holiday eating is a culinary minefield, there are plenty of things you can enjoy this season, which are still tooth-friendly!

You might not think that chocolate would make the list, and yes, it does fall into the category of “sweets”. But, dark chocolate is much closer to the substance in its natural state. It contains antioxidants that are beneficial to your system, and it contains less sugar than milk chocolate. But as with many things, moderation is the key.

At most parties and gatherings, you should find a platter containing cheese and vegetables. Hard cheese contains calcium that will benefit your teeth. The vitamins found in vegetables are good for your smile. The act of chewing stimulates the production of saliva, and the hard texture of cheese and vegetables will help to scrub your teeth of food particles. Those nuts you see in the tray at the end of the table also have protein, vitamins and minerals that will make your smile strong, but be careful when eating them so you don’t damage your teeth. It is the season for turkey, which is high in protein and phosphorous. Both of those are great for healthy teeth.

Even if you do indulge a little during the holidays, that’s fine. Be sure not to go overboard on the treats, drink plenty of water, and brush twice a day and floss at least once a day.
