Frequently Asked Questions

My dentures are uncomfortable. What should I do?

Dentures should never be painful or uncomfortable. If you experience discomfort, it is likely that your dentures don’t fit properly. Not only can ill-fitting dentures be uncomfortable, but they can also lead to inflammation, sores, or an infection.

If your dentures are causing you pain, contact our office by calling (910) 864-2944 and we’ll get you an appointment to see Dr. Choe. During your visit, he’ll examine your oral health and make any adjustments to your dentures or suggest a new set if it’s time.

How long after tooth extractions can I get dentures?

After a tooth extraction, you’ll want to wait six to eight weeks to be fitted for dentures. This allows time for the swelling to diminish and you’ll get a better fit on your dentures. Dr. Choe will assess how you’re healing during your follow-up appointment and this will determine how long you’ll have to wait.

Is it difficult to care for dentures?

Caring for your dentures is simple and will quickly become part of your daily routine. Food tends to stick to the surface of dentures because they’re more porous than natural teeth. You’ll want to prevent food from building up, as it could cause bad breath and possible infection.

Clean your dentures at least once a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use an overnight soak to disinfect them. Avoid products that may damage your dentures, like abrasive toothbrushes or hot water. Be sure to continue brushing your gums, tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Does insurance cover the cost of dentures?

Since dentures are considered a restorative treatment and are necessary to maintain the functionality of your mouth, most insurance providers cover at least part of the cost of the expenses. We suggest contacting your provider for information about your coverage.
